Zingiber kawagoii Ali
We're always on the lookout for new winter hardy gingers, and our prayers were answered in 2008, as we descended Taiwan's Ali Shan and spotted a massive forest of ginger lilies growing alongside giant bamboo, underneath a massive forest of cryptomerias at 5,300' elevation. The 30" tall gingers are adorned with clusters of small basal-produced, bright red flowers from September until a hard freeze. The clumps spread slowly in our climate, resulting in a 3' wide patch in ten years. It's only taken us twelve years to bulk up enough to finally share as a 2021 Plant Delights/JLBG introduction.
