Ficus pumila Moniers Hardy
We've tried a number of purportedly winter hardy creeping fig selections through the years, but none have been reliably winter hardy for us. Ficus pumila 'Monier's Hardy', discovered in an Oregon garden, is the only one that has survived single digits F temperatures so far, tolerating 7 degrees F. The spreading 1" tall, evergreen vine clings well to rocks and trees, and is often used to soften the starkness of brick buildings. In its native range from China south to Laos, it is used for a food, medicine, and poison...not necessarily in that order.
