Lycoris radiata var radiata Modern Japanese
There are a number of widely differing forms of the Chinese native Lycoris radiata in the trade, so our goal is to sort out the different ones and give them cultivar names so you'll know if you're buying an early or late flowering form. Lycoris radiata var. radiata is a form commonly imported from Japan that was named in 2013 by California lycoris breeder Phil Adams. Lycoris 'Modern Japanese' flowers for us with terminal heads of 7-8 brilliant, orange-red, lacy flowers atop 2' nekkid scapes, starting in early September, and is the last of the Lycoris radiata cultivars to flower. Lycoris radiata var. radiata 'Modern Japanese' is also one of the first surprise lilies to produce its fall foliage, which emerges in late September.
