Hedychium Daniel Weeks
This 1992 Larry Shatzer hybrid (probably Hedychium flavescens x gardnerianum), introduced by Florida's former Gainesville Tree Farm, is one of the longest-flowering of the ginger lilies, starting here in late July or early August and continuing until frost. The 4'+ tall stalks are topped with scrumptious, golden-yellow flowers with a dark gold throat. In early evening, the air is perfumed with their strong honeysuckle-like fragrance. When happy in moist, well-drained soils, the rapidly growing Hedychium 'Daniel Weeks' can form a 3-4' wide clump of arching canes in only a couple of seasons, so line up plenty of friends with whom you can share. We've had reports of Zone 6 hardiness to temperatures of -7F, so this may be much hardier that we expected.
